They know they've been cheating themselves by calling each other roomie.
Neela was in her marriage crisis, with fating feeling towards a loving husband who chose to remember her in the battlefield of Iraq.
Ray was spoiling himself and hiding his shyness by pretending strong and uncared, though everyone could see through their rommie relationship. The whole roomie thing, is just an excuse which keeps them step back.
The ending story of them is sympathetic. Ray could not blame Neela on her indecisiveness. The only thing they could blame on was their reservation to break through.
Oh I forgot there was a Tony Gates in between, who complicated everything.
